On Sept. 9, 1934, Wilsonia Benita Driver was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Driver would grow to become the poet and activist Sonia Sanchez. Throughout her luminous career, Sanchez has earned many accolades for her work, including an American Book Award and the National Education Association Award. She is currently retired.
