Funeral services for 7-year-old Austin resident Heaven Sutton, who was shot and killed outside her family's home on June 27, is scheduled for Friday, July 6.
Another sign of closure for the family came this past weekend when Chicago police arrested a suspect in the child's shooting. Alleged gang member Jerrell Dorsey, of the 1600 block of North Laramie, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with firearm. The 26-year-old has been denied bond.
The shooting took place just before 11 p.m. last Wednesday. Sutton was hit in the back by a stray bullet as she ran into her family's home after shots rang out. Her funeral will take place at St. Mark International Christian Church, 832 N. Leclaire, with a memorial scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11.
Police Supt. Garry McCarthy released a statement through the department Saturday, saying that a "person of interest" was in custody in the shooting. He also expressed thoughts about the family.
"While no family should have to endure the horrific and senseless loss of a young child, it is my hope that it will give Heaven's family some measure of solace to know we will not rest until we bring the person responsible for this tragedy to justice," McCarthy said. "We must do everything we can as a city and a department to ensure that we do not lose another child to violence."
