A West Side man who struck and killed a Bethany Hospital nurse in the early morning hours on Sept. 14 in a vehicle accident voluntarily turned himself into police last Friday.
Damien Armstead, 23, of the 3600 block of West Franklin, has been charged with DUI, reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, along with three other counts, according to police.
The incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. last Thursday at 3430 W. Congress near Bethany Hospital, located on Homan and Van Buren.
The victim, Katherine Thomas-Lowe, 49, was an ER nurse at Bethany, and lived in Markham, according to a Bethany Hospital spokesperson. Thomas-Lowe was on duty at that time, but no official details were released about how she became involved in the accident.
The hospital spokesperson said Thomas-Lowe was a veteran nurse, and had worked at the hospital for some time.
Armstead turned himself into 11th District police hours after the accident, according to police news affairs. Armstead was driving a grey and silver Ford Taurus going westbound on Congress when he struck Thomas-Lowe. The vehicle, according to witnesses, fled the scene, striking two other vehicles going west on Congress.
Armstead appeared in Bond Court on Sept. 16.
