Elementary and high school students from Austin need adults from this community to volunteer as tutors for the 2006-07 school year.
Students in grades one through 12 have been coming to Cluster Tutoring to receive free tutoring and mentoring for the past 17 years. Most of our students are from Austin, as were many of our first volunteers. Unfortunately, the number of Cluster tutors from Austin has dwindled over the years, and last year we didn’t have any tutors from this area. In 2006-07, we hope that trend will change.
If you have 90 minutes a week, you can make a difference in both the life of a child and in your community. Currently, there is a significant waiting list of students who need tutors. We have an especially strong need for volunteers at our Tuesday night program, which takes place at the Pine Avenue Church, 5460 W. Augusta. We also need tutors at our Thursday night program, which is located in Oak Park at the First United Church of Oak Park, 848 Lake Street. Tutoring takes place from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
The only requirements for becoming a tutor are a commitment to come to your weekly tutoring session and a desire to help. Our volunteers come from a wide variety of professional and educational backgrounds. Many tutors have been involved with Cluster for three, four, five, or more years, and find they get as much out of the program as the kids. The atmosphere is supportive, friendly, and relaxed.
