A 38-year-old man was shot Tuesday night after attempting to break up a fight on the 5100 block of West Madison, police said Wednesday.

The victim, whose name was not released by police as of early Wednesday, was critically wounded in the shooting. The incident occurred at around 8:45 late Tuesday. Police said the victim was attempting to break up a fight and as he approached the scene, one of the combatants pulled out a gun and shot him.

The victim was shot in the upper body and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, police said. The victim was listed in critical condition. It is not known if the victim was an Austin or a West Side resident.

Police said the gunman fled north on Leclaire Avenue after the shooting and remains at large. Police are still investigating.
