The older brother of a University of Notre Dame football player was shot and killed Tuesday in North Austin.
Earl “Tony” Hughes, 24, the older brother of Robert Hughes, who currently plays for the Fighting Irish, was shot in the head on the 5300 block of West Wabansia, about two blocks from his North Austin home, police said.
According to news reports, Earl Hughes was shot some time around 12:30 a.m., shortly after leaving his home where he had just returned from work about an hour and a half earlier.
A witness to the incident, according to police accounts, heard an argument and shots fired. Earl Hughes has a 1-year-old daughter and had only one arrest on his record, a disorderly conduct charge from 2000, police said. He was one of eight siblings.
His younger brother, Robert Hughes, is a freshman running back for Notre Dame. Earl Hughes, who was working for a Highland Park sports company training teenage athletes, had tried out for an Arena Football League team last year but did not make the final cut. Police are investigating the shooting.
