What do you get when you put a private detective, a gift basket maker, a lawyer, and motivational speaker and author together in the same room?

You get a powerhouse of black professionals looking to do business and network with one another.

That was the case last Friday as the Austin African American Business Networking Association hosted its regular mixer at Covenant Bank in North Lawndale, formerly Community Bank of Lawndale at Roosevelt and Homan.

The occasion not only mixed business with networking, but also with conversation and catered food by business owner Patty Ringo’s Katr2U. Malcolm Crawford, executive director of AAABNA, encouraged participants to continue networking with those in the room and to spread that effort throughout the community. Attendees included Bill Kates, president and CEO of Kates Detective and Security, Inc.; Rhonda Rogers, designer of Rhonda’s Basket Designs; attorney and South Side native Yolanda Thomas; and author Dr. Bernadette Anderson.

The Austin African American Business Networking Association started in 2003 by Crawford and other business owners in the community. Austin Weekly News will feature some of the businesses from Friday’s mixer in upcoming issues.
