IN MEMORIAM
Austin Weekly News columnist China Hill, a teacher at KIPP Academy on the West Side, recently lost her mother Kim Hill-Nicks.

China’s grandmother, CherryTee Jefferson, and one of the stepsisters, Rochelle, were both pregnant at the same time in 1956 and both named their daughters Kim. The first photo I ever took of Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. included CherryTee, sister Rita Cloyd and a friend.

China was recently named “Teacher of the Year” by KIPP, so needless to say, her grandmother, mother, siblings and entire family were extremely proud.

Kim died on July 12, 2010 and a celebration of her life was held on Sunday, July 18. She graduated from May Elementary School in 1969 and from Austin High in 1973. She remarried in March 2007 to Odias Nicks, who was a loving husband and considerate father to all five of her daughters. Kim earned her certificate in nursing and worked at the Department of Public Aid. Her four other daughters are Cherry Regina Bertha Ann, Unique Antonia Ametria Brenae, Kimberly Natasha Maureen and Chastity Alexandria Dominique.

Kim is survived by her mother, CherryTee; her brother, Douglas Hill; her sisters, Bernadette Hill and Michelle Wheeler; her sons through marriage, Tony, Delaney, Robert Frederick Coleman, Odies Nicks Jr., Donta Nicks, Lemain Nicks and Jamar Nicks; her aunts, Bertha Jefferson and Ann Laura Gibson; her nephew, Antonio Hill; and a host of relatives and friends.
