Frederick Douglass Academy High School gave the school’s urban garden a spring cleaning on April 12, joined by Exelon Corp. employee volunteers in the company-wide observance of National Volunteer Week.

Students from Frederick Douglass, 543 N. Waller, assembled a rock garden and, along with volunteers, spread mulch, planted shrubs and built park benches. Douglass students started the garden, located across the street from their school and near Austin Town Hall, last year. Those who participated in the service project are part of Exelon’s Stay in School Initiative, a mentoring and after-school program targeting students from at-risk neighborhoods. National Volunteer Week was from April 10-15.
