Sylvester Tatum

Chicago police have arrested a suspect in connection to a November 2011 shooting death of man in Austin.

Police on Tuesday charged Sylvester Tatum, of the 5400 block of W. Thomas, with one count of first degree murder. Tatum was scheduled to appear in Central Bond Court at 26th and California on Jan 29. Tatum, 33, was arrested by 25th District police officers Saturday morning Jan. 26.

Tatum is charged in the shooting death of a 34-year-old Berwyn man. According to police, that investigation began on Nov. 5, 2011 in the 300 block of North Pine. Police were called to assist EMS when the victim was discovered by a family member unresponsive on the floor of an apartment. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A subsequent investigation led to the identification of Tatum as the offender.

According to police, Tatum was spotted last Saturday driving a cab in Austin. Officers on patrol near Grand and Cicero avenues received information that the individual wanted in connection with the 2011 homicide was in the area.

Officers were informed that Tatum was driving a white taxi cab bearing Illinois plates. Following a brief search of the area and with a description of the vehicle, police located the cab in the parking lot of a car wash at Grand and Cicero.

Officers stopped the vehicle and placed Tatum in custody without incident. He was transported to the Area North Bureau of Detectives, who was able to secure charges against him.
