Figure skater Debi Thomas on Feb. 27, 1988 became the first African American to win a medal (bronze) at the winter Olympic Games.
After retiring from figure skating, Thomas, 45, became an orthopedic surgeon. She’s currently in private practice in Richlands, Va.
