On May 1, 1902, James Winkfield won a second consecutive Kentucky Derby, the last African American to race a winner.
His horse finished second in the race the following year. Born in Chilesburg Ky. on April 12, 1882, Winkfield was a thoroughbred jockey and horse trainer. He died in 1974 at age 91.
