It was May 3, 1845 when Macon B. Allen became the first licensed black American lawyer in the United States, after being admitted to the bar in Boston.
He later opened the nation’s first black law practice with partner Robert Morris, another noted black lawyer in the country. A native of Indiana, Allen, 77, died on June 11, 1894.
