The play, “The Chip Woman’s Fortune,” debuted on Broadway on May 15, 1923. It was the first nonmusical by an African-American playwright to run on Broadway.
Willis Richardson, a native of Wilmington N.C., wrote the play. His other works include “The Broken Banjo” (1925). Richardson, 77, died in 1977.
