Cardiss Collins was elected to the U.S. Congress on June 5, 1973 in a special election. She succeeded her husband, George Collins, who died in a November 1972 plane crash.
She served 12 terms before retiring in 1995. Collins, 81, died on Feb. 3, 2013.
