W.E.B. Dubois was a founding member of the NAACP, but on this day, June 19, 1934, Dubois broke ties with the civil rights organization.
He resigned from the NAACP after refusing to retract his statement that he believed “separate but equal,” was now an acceptable goal for blacks.
