Langton Hughes’ musical, Black Nativity, made its off-Broadway debut on Dec. 11, 1961. The Christmas/gospel-themed show was written by the famed playwright. A film adaption starring Forest Whittaker and Angela Bassett, and directed by Kasi Lemmons is currently in theaters.
