Famed filmmaker Ernest Dickerson won the New York Film Critics Circle Award on Dec. 18, 1989, for best cinematography for Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing (1989). Prior to directing his own films and television shows, Dickerson was Lee’s cinematographer on such films as She’s Gotta Have It (1986) and Malcolm X (1992). Most recently, Dickerson is among the episode directors on AMC’s The Walking Dead.
