Soul singer Sam Cooke, 33, was born in Clarksdale, Miss. in 1931. His family moved to Chicago in 1933. Cooke is a pioneering singer, songwriter and entrepreneur in the music industry. He was among the few black artists to own his own record label and publishing company. His hit songs include “You Send Me,” “Wonderful World,” and “A Change is Gonna Come.” Cooke died on Dec. 11, 1964.
