Local-Motions Performing Arts Organization held a fundraiser at the Harold Washington Cultural Center in Chicago on Friday, March 28th. Guests enjoyed a performance by youth participants of After School Matters and a production of The Monologue of My Hips by LaNita Joseph Dance & Cultural Center. A portion of proceeds benefit Local-Motions Metamorphosis program.
The Monologues of My Hips explores the mostly female stories as it relates to how we and others see our bodies and challenges the standards of beauty as it pertains to body image. The choreoplay is told through a series of monologues, overlapping a plot of a young plus size dancer trying to lose weight, and full on choreographically explosive dance numbers. The show is entertaining, enlightening and very inspiring. The show explores serious issues like self esteem, bullying and even death but also has very comedic moments, fun dances and flirty poetry. All ages are welcomed to join us as we celebrate women’s and some men’s bodies. This show is also honoring, Local Motions Dance company and their 15 years of service to the community and helping the well being of young girls everywhere.
The Metamorphosis Project was launched last year with the help of The Blessmans’ family cottage, UPS foundations and so many others. The project is a seven day, six night road trip designed by the Local-Motion’s Executive team. Its mission is to help young girls develop positive self image, responsible personal conduct, and respect for self and others. This is accomplished through self achievement, cultural enrichment and mentoring.
Eight to ten young girls from the Chicago Austin Community and surrounding areas are pre-selected to attend the road trip. The weekend leadership is comprised of trusted women in business and community leaders. These women will provide wisdom and resources that will help girls through the importance of balanced nutrition, proper etiquette, positive self-esteem and professional and educational development.
