CHICAGO, June 2, 2014: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Gamma Omega chapter has teamed with the Chicago Park District to host “AKAzaar: The Power of Community” on Saturday, June 14. Being held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Austin Town Hall, 5610 W. Lake Street, Chicago, AKAzaar will provide information on job training, financial assistance, health tips and more to residents of Chicago’s west side and near west suburban communities.
“We’re delighted to be providing this free event to Chicago’s Austin community and surrounding areas,” says Kimberly R. Morton, president of Tau Gamma Omega. “We are hopeful that with the range of services we’re offering, everyone with a need will be able to attend and obtain meaningful and useful information.”
In addition to free health screenings, AKAzaar will offer residents information on assistance in paying utility bills, how to save on their monthly mortgage with lower interest rates, and determining eligibility for lower mortgage payments. Workshops also will be presented on: career development; women’s health and heart disease; home energy management; adult and juvenile justice, and a work-readiness program for ex-offenders.
In planning the event, Tau Gamma Omega collaborated with several community and health organizations, local colleges, businesses and corporations. These include: Com Ed; the American Heart Association; the Safer Foundation; City Colleges of Chicago, and “Austin Coming Together.” AKAzaar’s activities are being done in conjunction with Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national health, economic security and social justice initiatives.
