COURTESY OF GET COVERED AMERICA

CHICAGO – While the Affordable Care Act health insurance open enrollment endedMarch 31, some consumers may still be able to qualify for special enrollment period. Get Covered America staff and volunteers will be taking the message to consumers at the Austin Juneteeth Festival on FridaySaturday and Sunday.

Get Covered America will let consumers know they may be eligible for a special enrollment period if they have had a qualifying life event, such as getting married, having a child, moving, or losing other health coverage. If somebody experiences a qualifying life event, they have 60 days to enroll through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Volunteers will also be talking to festival attendees about Medicaid enrollment which continues year-round.

The educational efforts come after a recent Enroll America survey found that those who enrolled knew more details of the law and its benefits than those who did not enroll.   PerryUndem conducted the national survey of consumers who enrolled in coverage during the first open enrollment period and consumers who remain uninsured.   The survey found that 56% of enrollees knew that financial assistance was available, while only 26% of those who did not enroll were aware.  Seventy-seven percent of the over 217,000 Illinoisans who enrolled through the Marketplace received financial help.
