Civil rights activist Medgar Evers, right, was born in 1925 in Decatur, Miss. A field secretary for the NAACP, Evers, 37, was shot to death outside his Jackson Miss. home on June 12, 1963. His killer, Byron De La Beckwith, a noted member of the White Citizen’s Council and Mississippi KKK, was prosecuted twice after the shooting but both trials ended in jury deadlock. He was finally brought to justice in 1994 and convicted of first-degree murder with a life sentence. He died in 2001 at age 80.
