Thurgood Marshall, civil rights attorney and U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Born July 2, Marshall (1908-1993) is the first black person to serve on the Supreme Court. He was appointed in 1967 by President Lyndon Johnson. Marshall, 84, died in 1993.
