Valerie Simpson, singer and songwriter who turned 68 on Aug. 26. Simpson and her husband, Nick Ashford, co-wrote several hit songs, including Motown classics “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.” Ashford and Simpson also had their own hits, including “Solid.” Nick Ashford died on Aug. 22, 2011.
