Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd) has plans to expand, redevelop and rename Buckthorn Playlot, on the 4300 block of South Calumet Avenue, after Hadiya Pendleton, the 15-year-old King College Prep student shot and killed in January 2013.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the $1.2 million project would include a walking trial, children’s spray pool, exercise areas, new lighting and landscaping, and updated playground equipment.

An advisory council meeting was held Thursday, Dec. 11, concerning the park name change. According to a Chicago Sun-Times report, Chicago Park District has yet to receive a formal request.

Park construction is scheduled to begin spring 2015 and finish in the fall of that same year.
