Entrepreneur Maggie Lena Walker died this week on Dec. 15, 1934. She was the first female of any race to charter a bank in the United States, the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1902. A native of Richmond Virginia, Walker, 70, was also a newspaper publisher and teacher.
