On April 15, 1889, African-American civil rights and labor leader Asa Philip Randolph was born. Randolph was the leader of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first largely black labor union. He also led, and helped organize, the March on Washington Movement. He died on May 16, 1979.
