Austin’s Greater St. John Bible Church and the Austin Empowerment Coalition teamed up to host the Austin Community Fest held last Sat. August 29, on the grounds of the Ella Flagg Young Elementary School, 1434 N Parkside Ave. According to a statement released by Rev. Ira Acreee, St. John’s pastor, the festival was “first of its kind.”
“The festival is first of its kind and is a way to soften the image of a community shadowed with a past filled with gun violence,” the statement notes.
The festival’s lineup featured local and national Gospel talent, such as Stella Award winner Diane Williams and national recording artist J. Moss. Community members in attendance were treated to free health screenings, food and clothes.
“Two organizations are partnering to bring this festival to a community that has been hit hard with urban gun violence and high unemployment. There will be something for all age demographics,” said Acree in the statement.
