On September 2, 1776, James Forten was born. Forten was an influential African American abolitionist and wealthy businessman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He used the enormous wealth obtained from his sailmaking businesses to bankroll many important anti-slavery causes. He died on March 4, 1842.
