The Urban Bridges Medical Mentoring Program, a project of the I Am Abel Foundation, founded by Dr. LaMenta S. Conway, MD, MPH practicing at both Hines VA and Elmhurst Hospitals and longtime Oak Park- River Forest Resident, is having its first annual gala on Thursday, April 7, 2016 in Oak Park , at the Cheney Mansion, 220 N. Euclid Ave. from 6:30pm – 8:30pm. Twenty-six high school and college students have been selected from schools in the Western Suburbs as well as Chicago area colleges and universities. This new yearlong program is designed to help minority and economically disadvantaged youth who want to become a doctor to be mentored by practicing physician. Students will develop a specialized rapport with a physician mentor and participate in various medical shadowing activities to learn various aspects of the field. 

The program will feature bi-monthly events with a team of physicians and students. Activities will include regularly scheduled symposiums on topics related to health care and medicine as well as exposure to the life of a primary care physician and a host of subspecialties.
