Turnout in the 2016 General Election was down five percent across the city, according to Chicago Board of Elections data. On Nov. 8, 70 percent of registered voters in Chicago went to the polls. Four years ago, in the 2012 General Election, turnout was 75 percent.

On the West Side, voting in the 24th, 28th, 29th and 37th Wards were even more depressed, with turnout levels down by double digits compared to 2012.

  • 24th Ward: 58 percent || vs. 2012: 76 percent
  • 28th Ward: 64 percent || vs. 2012: 75 percent
  • 29th Ward: 67 percent || vs. 2012: 78 percent
  • 37th Ward: 61 percent || vs. 2012: 74 percent

Voters in those wards selected Democratic candidates by overwhelming margins — from the top, to the bottom, of the ticket.

Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton won the city with 84 percent of the vote, but in those four West Side wards she generated majorities that ranged from 91 to 97 percent.

West Side voters also delivered majorities that were higher than the city average to victorious Democrats like U.S. Senator-elect Tammy Duckworth, U.S. Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th), Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown.
