Start on your Black History essay for the City Treasurer
Each year the City Treasurer’s Office sponsors a Black History Month Essay Competition. The winner of this competition will receive a $2,500 non-renewable scholarship to support the cost of attending the first year of college. The deadline for the essay competition, which is open to all CPS high school seniors, is Feb. 23.

Start on your Black History essay for CPD
The 15th District Community Policing Office is sponsoring a Black History essay competition for 5th through 8th grade students and high school students who are residents of the area. In a 1-2 page, double-spaced, typed essay, participants should identify someone who made a significant, positive impact in their lives and how this person influenced them.
Essays, along with participants’ names and phone numbers, should be emailed to CAPS015@chicagopolice.org by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Winning essays will be published in Austin Weekly News (along with the writer’s photo). Essay competition winners will also receive gift cards. First-, second- and third-place winners will be notified on March 7.
