Chicago Police Department officers with the 15th District sponsored a Black History Month essay contest in February, inviting local students in Austin to write pieces in honor of the month. Five winners were chosen. Last week, the winning students went to 15th District headquarters to pickup their prizes.
Four of the five winners were on hand to recieve their awards. They include:
- Malachi Jefferson, 6th grade, George Leland STEM School
- Julissa Soto, 8th grade, George Rogers Clark Elementary
- Lavareuna Cross, 5th grade, KIPP Academy Chicago
- Jakhia Chatman, 8th grade, Howe School of Excellence
