Losing your Main Man is tough,” the alderman wrote. “From the day I had my first hit in T-ball you were there, my first basket scored in Biddy Basketball you were there, through school and college you were there, and when I became Alderman there you were standing right there beside me, my Main Man. Thank you for being the best Father a son could ever have. Love You Dad! [sic].”

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a statement on the day Ervin died. The mayor stated that Ervin was a “was a fixture in the Harrison District and a pioneer for community policing.

“His service to our city is measured by the countless number of colleagues and community members he impacted, inspired and unified.
