An Austin church is set to receive a prominent award from a 135-year-old organization that "works with communities to address issues of racism and poverty," according to the organization's website.

Third Unitarian Church received the City on the Hill award from Community Renewal Society for "outstanding leadership" that has been demonstrated by the church's "dedicated turnout, presence and participation in every single area  of CRS Work," according to the letter from the organization notifying the church of the award.

The faith-based society was started in 1882. The goal of the organization is "informs, organizes and trains both communities and individuals to advocate for social and economic justice," according to its website.

Currently, congregations that are members of the society  are focused on three priority goals: police accountability, commitment to anti-racism and a just economy for safe communities.

The award will be presented on Oct. 6 at the society's 136th annual membership assembly, held from 8:45 a.m. until noon, at the Church of the Good Shepherd UCC, 5700 S. Prairie Ave.
