Longtime Westsider Brenetta Howell Barrett, president and CEO of Pathfinders Prevention Education Fund, recently lost her only son Kevin L. Howell Sr. He was 52. Although Kevin passed away in July a memorial concert was held for him Sept. 14 at Third Unitarian Church, 301 N. Mayfield Ave.
The concert included musical selections by Donald Neale, music director, Third Unitarian Church; comments by Brenetta; and reflections by West Side activist and educator Vivian Stewart Tyler, Bennett Johnson (adopted uncle), sister Cynthia T. Henderson, and Useni Eugene Perkins.
Brenetta has certainly had her share of personal losses in the past two years. In 2006 she lost one of her daughters, Viveca Lynne Howell Mayes, an educator, who was 47 years old. Two week late,r Brenetta lost her youngest sister, and last year a granddaughter.
Brenetta has been a political organizer and most recently was shown in Senator Obama’s background bio on CNN.
