Octavia R. Roberts was born into slavery on this day in 1853 in Oglethrope, Ga. A religious and civil rights leader throughout much of her life, Roberts authored The House of Bondage, a collection of interviews she compiled of former slaves, among the first slave narratives ever published. She is thought to have died sometime around 1890, shortly after her book was published.
