The Sankofa Cultural Arts and Business Center in Austin was recently given the 2011 Golden Trumpet Award. Malcolm and Stacia Crawford (pictured), co-owners of Sankofa, 5820 W. Chicago Ave., accepted the honor during the May 6, luncheon at the Palmer House Hilton in downtown Chicago. The Publicity Club of Chicago recognized Sankofa for its collaboration on the Austin AIDS Mural-“Austin is Doing Something.” It’s located on the corner of Chicago Avenue and Mayfield and is the centerpiece of the new Ed Bailey/ Leola Spann Community Garden. Green space, benches and other amenities are being planned for the now vacant lot.
