A 14-year-old west suburban teen was killed July 3 after being shot as he rode his bicycle along North Avenue in Chicago.

Damani Henard was riding his bike eastbound around 12:45 a.m. from a friend’s home near Keeler Avenue to his Oak Park home on North Lombard Avenue, according to police.

Two men appeared and ran south across North Avenue, one carrying a handgun, according to police. One man reportedly shot Henard in the head and back, and the two fled northbound on Leclaire Avenue, police said.

According to a story in the Chicago Tribune, Henard would have been a freshman at Oak Park and River Forest High School this fall.

A second fatal shooting took place less than a mile away a few hours earlier. A 19-year old girl, Ashley Hardmon, was shot around 9:45 p.m. when two gunmen fired into a crowd gathered in the 4800 block of West Potomac Street. She was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was declared dead.
