Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest is pleased to announce that SisterHouse is the recipient of Community Bank’s Champion Grant. The purpose of the Champion Grant is to assist organizations in providing community outreach programs for low or moderate income individuals.

SisterHouse was founded in 1981 as a nonprofit social service agency to provide vital services for women recovering from substance abuse and mental health issues in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. Their mission is to support women in the process of establishing wholesome, productive and drug-free lifestyles by helping them achieve and maintain sobriety, acquire skills necessary for successful independent living, become gainfully employed, and find permanent affordable housing with supportive services upon program completion. In addition, SisterHouse works with a variety of human service agencies and medical service providers to facilitate women’s access to outpatient substance abuse treatment, mental health services, vocational and educational services, and nutritional courses.

A grant in the amount of $1,500 was presented to Bonnie Johnson, Executive Director of SisterHouse, on Thursday, July 11. Bernard D. Headley II, Community Lending Specialist for Community Bank, presented the grant. SisterHouse will use the Champion Grant to support their Recovery is Possible program, which addresses the underlying issues of addiction. Following addiction treatment, each woman is then enrolled in the Cara job-training program. The Cara program prepares women for employment by providing in-house tutoring and computer literacy training. More information about SisterHouse is available on their website at
