“My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing…”
Marian Anderson, opera singer. On Easter Sunday April 9, 1939, Anderson (1897-1993) performed “My Country Tis of Thee” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The concert was arranged after Anderson was denied the right to sing to an integrated audience at Washington D.C.’s Constitutional Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
