Lelia Foley was elected as the first black woman mayor of a U.S. city on April 16, 1973. She served Taft, Okla. until stepping down in 1989 but was elected again in 1999. At 72, and now going by Lelia Foley-Davis, she’s currently serving as Taft’s mayor.
