West Side shooting victims reported by Chicago Tribune || Saturday, Sept. 5 through Friday, Sept. 11

Sept. 8: Male, 18, in Austin

“An 18-year-old man was shot in the North Austin neighborhood about 12:05 a.m. Tuesday. Police said the man was approached by three people, one of whom produced a handgun and shot the man in his ankle. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in stable condition.”

Sept. 7: Male, 23 in West Garfield Park

“A 23-year-old man was pronounced dead after being shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood at 7:47 p.m. Monday, police said. The shooting happened in the 3100 block of West 5th Avenue. The man was shot in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

“The man was identified as DeAndre Myles, of the 2700 block of West Maypole Avenue, and he was pronounced dead at 8:26 p.m. at Stroger Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.”

Sept. 6: Female, 29 || Female, 24 || Male, 30, in Austin

“The most recent nonfatal shooting left three people wounded about 3:35 a.m. Sunday in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said. A 29-year-old woman was grazed in the leg after leaving a party in the 100 block of North Latrobe Avenue and was taken to Loretto Hospital, where her condition was stabilized. A 30-year-old man was shot at the same time and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition with chest and back wounds, police said. Later, a 24-year-old woman got herself to Rush Oak Park Hospital where she was in good condition suffering from a gunshot wound to the left pinkie finger, Sedevic said.”

Austin man charged with raping prostitute he met on website

Roy Akins, 29, of Austin, was arrested Sept. 3 after allegedly raping a 24-year-old prostitute he met on the website Backpage.com.

Akins had agreed to pay the prostitute $180 for intercourse, but he reportedly didn’t have any money.

“So when the woman came to his home in the Austin neighborhood on Aug. 9, Akins walked her upstairs, led her to a bedroom and then returned holding a gun and raped her, Assistant State’s Attorney Kim Przekota said at Akins’ bond hearing Thursday,” according to a Chicago Sun-Times report.

After leaving Akins’s home on the 1100 block of North Lawler, the woman called 911 and went to the hospital, her attorney said. After identifying Akins in a lineup, the suspect was held on $750,000 bail and charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault.

Violent robberies reported late last month

Chicago police are warning Austin residents of two violent robberies that were reported in the area late last month.

In both incidents, suspects reportedly walked up to victims, pushed them down and robbed them of their property, according to a community alert issued by CPD.

The robberies took place on Aug. 24, at 5:15 a.m., on the 5600 block of West Augusta Blvd. and on Aug. 26 at 2:30 p.m., on the 5700 block of West Chicago Ave.

Police describe the suspects as black males, 18 to 25 years old, between 5-8 and 6 feet, with medium complexions. Anyone with information on the robberies are urged to call detectives at (312) 744-8263.
