Rev. Marshall Hatch, pastor of the New Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in West Garfield Park, was appointed by Gov. Bruce Rauner to Chicago State University’s board of trustees last month.

Hatch, 58, has degrees from Western Illinois University, Georgetown University and McCormick Theological Seminary. In 1998, he was selected to be one of four Harvard Divinity School Merrill Fellows, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The West Side native arrives on the board of the South Side institution as it faces one of its toughest tests. The university has recently been embroiled in the state budget impasse, which has threatened to thrust the nearly 150-year-old school into fiscal insolvency. In February, administrators issued layoff notifications to all 900 of the institution’s employees.
