Today is Local News Day, a national moment to reconnect with and support the trusted local newsrooms that keep our communities informed, connected, and accountable.

This year, for us, that celebration comes with something new and meaningful.

In February, the Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest, Forest Park Review, Riverside-Brookfield Landmark, and Austin Weekly News began a new chapter as part of NEWSWELL, a mission-driven organization focused on sustaining and strengthening local journalism. At a time when too many local newsrooms are shrinking or disappearing, NEWSWELL offers a different path. One grounded in long-term stability, operational support, and a commitment to independent, community-centered reporting.

For decades, our publications have been dedicated to covering the stories that shape daily life across Chicago’s West Side and near west suburbs. From school board decisions and local elections to small businesses, public safety, and the people who make these communities vibrant, our goal has always been to provide clear, reliable information you can trust.

NEWSWELL strengthens our ability to do that work. It allows us to invest in our newsroom, expand our reach, and build a more sustainable future for local journalism in our communities.

But even with that support, the model still depends on readers.

Local journalism only works when the community stands behind it. Your support helps fund the reporting, keeps our work free to read, and ensures these publications remain strong for years to come. To mark Local News Day, we’re also sending a limited-edition NEWSWELL Chicago T-shirt to anyone who makes a gift of $100 or more today.

Thank you for your support and for believing in the future of local journalism.

With gratitude,

Max Reinsdorf
