AUSTIN — Open House Chicago attendees this year will get a look at some familiar favorites and hidden gems in Austin, including a neighborhood workforce hub that was recently recognized for its preservation work.

Presented by the Chicago Architecture Center, the tour of the city highlights nearly 200 locations in more than 30 neighborhoods, giving neighbors a behind-the-scenes peek at local landmarks and institutions. It runs Saturday and Sunday.

The Aspire Center for Workforce Innovation will be on full display during the event. The building at 5500 W. Madison St. is a joint venture of the Westside Health Authority and Austin Coming Together, featuring offices in a three-story, 85,000-square-foot building alongside Legal Aid Chicago, manufacturing workforce development organization Jane Addams Resource Corporation and the Freedom Defense Center of Austin.

The center is a redevelopment of the former Emmet Elementary School, which was among 50 CPS schools closed in 2013 as part of a cost-saving plan by then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The school was vacant until the Westside Health Authority bought the property in 2018 with the goal of keeping the site community-centered.

Last month, the Aspire Center was awarded a 2026 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for the project’s historical restoration, improved quality of life and sparked economic development.
