CPS votes to close 50 schools, four in Austin
Asif Wilson, a 7th and 8th grade science teacher at Horatio May Elementary Community Academy, will soon be unemployed. His five-year tenure with the school officially ended Wednesday when the Chicago Board of Education voted to shutter an unprecedented 50 public schools.
Trial date set for Ford's federal bank fraud case
State Rep. LaShawn Ford appeared in federal court today where Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer set a trial date for April 22, 2014 on alleged bank fraud charges leveled against the West Side Democrat.

Ohio case gives hope to Yasmin's family

Rose Starnes turned on the television, the morning of May 7, and saw hope. News reports recounted the daring escape of Amanda Berry and the subsequent rescue of two other missing women from a Cleveland, Ohio house they were held captive in for more than 10 years. Starnes' mind immediately turned to her daughter Yasmin Acree.
Women student co-op opens for business in Chicago

At the age of 18, Brandi Scott is a business owner. She is part of a student-run business cooperative that hopes to hit a high note in the music industry. Scott is one of four female owners of Mech Creations, based in the Austin Polytechnical Academy, 231 N. Pine Ave.

Longtime Austin community leader MaryAnne Simmons was one of five remembered during a brick-laying ceremony at Austin Memorial Garden on May 18. Located at Washington and Laramie, the garden was created by the Austin Green Team.
