The Chicago Westside Branch NAACP took seven performers last month to the national NAACP Afro-American, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, taking place in Los Angeles.

Jela McKinney placed third in the national competition. McKinney, a freshman at ChiArts (Chicago High School for the Arts), won a bronze medal in the drawing category, one of 26 categories the event covered.

Also competing were: Breanna Smith (music instrumental classical), Kayla Robertson (music vocal contemporary), Layla West (oratory), Shaondell Black (filmmaking), Destiny Thompson (dramatics) and Ebonee Wilkins (sculpture).
