William Hastie took an unprecedented stance in protest against segregation when he resigned his post as a civilian aide to the Secretary of War on this day in 1943.
A Knoxville, Tenn. native, Hastie, who was also a lawyer and judge in his career, died on April 14, 1976 at age 71.
